Where a survey is most valuable
- Older vessels, or vessels with incomplete service history
- Yachts you are buying in another country or without extended inspection time
- Vessels with a known incident, repair or refit history
- Complex yachts with substantial machinery and systems
- Any purchase where a lender or insurer requires a current report
What a survey realistically gives you
A professional survey can help identify visible or accessible conditions that may require repair, maintenance or further specialist investigation. It gives you documented findings rather than impressions, and a basis for deciding how to proceed.
It cannot guarantee that every defect will be found, and it is not a warranty on the vessel. Treat it as risk reduction, not risk elimination.
Independence matters
The seller wants to sell the yacht and the broker facilitates the transaction. The independent surveyor performs a different role: assessing the vessel's condition for the buyer. Appoint someone who is not connected to the sale.
This is not a comment on the honesty of brokers or sellers — simply a difference in role and interest.
