Sailing Yacht Rigging Survey

Rig failure is expensive and potentially dangerous. A rigging survey examines the components that keep the mast standing and the sail plan working.

Typical areas of attention

  • Standing rigging condition, age and terminations
  • Chainplates and their attachment to the structure
  • Mast, spreaders, tangs and fittings
  • Furling systems and running rigging
  • Deck hardware, winches and load paths
  • Evidence of corrosion, fatigue or previous repair

Some rig components can only be assessed properly with the mast unstepped, or by a specialist rigger. The surveyor will advise where that applies.

For catamarans and performance yachts

Multihulls and performance yachts often carry higher rig loads and may use composite or rod rigging that requires specialist assessment. Confirm that the surveyor or rigger has relevant experience with your vessel's construction and rig type.

Common questions

How old is 'too old' for standing rigging?

There is no single universal figure; insurers and riggers apply different guidance depending on rig type, material, usage and inspection history. Ask the surveyor to assess the specific rig rather than relying on age alone.
