Do You Need a Haul-Out for a Yacht Survey?

Underwater areas of the hull cannot be properly assessed with the vessel afloat, so most pre-purchase surveys involve a lift.

What the haul-out allows

  • Inspection of the hull below the waterline
  • Assessment of moisture readings and hull condition where applicable
  • Propellers, shafts, rudders, bearings and through-hull fittings
  • Corrosion protection and anodes
  • Keel and keel attachment on sailing yachts

Yard limits determine where you can lift

Not every boatyard can lift every yacht. Travel lift capacity, maximum length, beam, draft and weight all constrain which facility can handle a given vessel — which is why our city pages publish verified facility specifications with their sources and verification dates.

Practical scheduling

Haul-outs are booked with the yard, usually separately from the surveyor's own fee, and slots can be limited in busy periods. Coordinate the surveyor's availability, the yard slot and the seller's agreement to the lift as early as possible in the transaction.

Confirm in the purchase agreement who is responsible for haul-out, launch and any yard fees.

Arrange an Independent Pre-Purchase Survey

Tell us where the yacht is and we’ll help you identify independent marine surveyors near the vessel.
