Engine Survey

Engines and machinery are among the most expensive systems on a yacht. A specialist engine survey looks deeper than a general condition survey.

Why a separate engine survey

A general pre-purchase survey usually includes a visual assessment of engines and their operating condition where accessible. It is not a mechanical strip-down. Where engine hours are high, service history is incomplete, or the installation is complex, buyers often commission a specialist in addition to the general survey.

  • Visual inspection of engines, gearboxes and mountings
  • Fluid condition and, where appropriate, oil analysis
  • Compression or borescope inspection where the specialist considers it appropriate
  • Cooling, exhaust and fuel system condition
  • Operating parameters recorded under load during a sea trial
  • Generator and auxiliary machinery where included in scope

Testing methods vary by engine type, access and the specialist's assessment. Agree the scope in writing.

Common questions

Is an engine survey included in a pre-purchase survey?

Not usually in depth. General surveys assess engines visually and in operation where accessible; detailed mechanical assessment is normally a separate specialist engagement.
