Superyacht Pre-Purchase Survey
On a larger yacht the purchase risk moves from the hull to the systems, the documentation and the maintenance history. A superyacht survey is a coordinated programme of inspections, not a single visit by one surveyor.
When a superyacht survey is required
Above roughly 24 metres a yacht stops behaving like a large boat and starts behaving like a small commercial vessel. It carries redundant machinery, generators, hydraulics, stabilisers, HVAC plant, water treatment, complex electrical distribution and integrated navigation and monitoring systems. Each of those is a separate discipline, and no single surveyor competently tests all of them in a day.
A superyacht pre-purchase survey is normally commissioned when the transaction is under a memorandum of agreement with a defined inspection period, when a lender or underwriter requires condition evidence, or when a buyer intends a refit and needs to understand what the yard will find once panels come off.
Standard yacht survey vs superyacht pre-purchase survey
The difference is not simply length. It is who attends, how systems are proven, and how much of the vessel's paperwork forms part of the assessment.
- Team: a standard survey is usually one generalist surveyor. A superyacht survey is normally led by a surveyor who coordinates specialists — engineer, electrical or automation technician, coatings inspector, rig specialist on sailing yachts.
- Method: instead of visual inspection plus a short trial, systems are run, load-tested where the seller permits, and cross-checked against alarm and monitoring logs.
- Documentation: class status, flag and registry records, tonnage and safety certification, service records, warranty status and refit invoices are reviewed as evidence, not treated as background paperwork.
- Duration: a general survey is often completed in a day or two. A larger yacht programme commonly runs over a week or more, including haul-out and sea trial windows.
- Output: findings are usually reported by system, with commercial consequence separated from cosmetic observation so the buyer can price the outcome.
Scope on a larger yacht
- Hull structure, including accessible framing, tank tops, watertight boundaries and evidence of past repair
- Superstructure, deck equipment, hatches, doors, glazing and sealing
- Coatings condition — topside and superstructure paint is one of the largest single cost items on a superyacht
- Main engines and gearboxes, mounts, alignment evidence, running hours and service history
- Generators, load sharing and paralleling behaviour
- Propulsion — shafts, bearings, seals, propellers, thrusters, or pods and their service status
- Electrical distribution, shore power, isolation, earthing and battery installations
- Automation, alarm and monitoring systems, including logged faults
- Navigation, communication and bridge integration
- Safety systems — fire detection and suppression, bilge and emergency arrangements, life-saving appliances and their service dates
- HVAC and chilled water plant, air handling and humidity control
- Hydraulics — steering, stabilisers, cranes, platforms, tenders and passerelles
- Stabilisers, whether fin or gyroscopic, and their service condition
- Tenders, toys, davits and lifting equipment with their own certification
- Interior condition, joinery, moisture evidence and finishes
Scope is agreed before the survey and varies with the vessel, its systems and what the seller permits. No survey identifies every defect.
Documentation and refit history review
On a well-kept larger yacht the paperwork is the fastest route to the truth. Service records show whether maintenance was performed or deferred, refit invoices show what was actually replaced rather than what a broker describes as new, and warranty documents show whether an expensive system is still supported.
Gaps matter as much as contents. A yacht with a complete engineering log and no coatings records is telling you something specific about where money has not been spent.
- Class and flag status, and any outstanding conditions or recommendations
- Registration, tonnage and safety certification with expiry dates
- Engineering and machinery logs, running hours and major service events
- Refit and yard invoices, and the scope actually completed
- Warranty status on engines, generators, stabilisers and electronics
- Equipment certification for lifting gear, liferafts and fire systems
Haul-out and sea trial
Underwater areas cannot be assessed properly in the water, and on a larger yacht the lift itself becomes a planning problem: available lift or dock capacity is limited, and beam constrains options as much as tonnage. Haul-out slots for large yachts are booked, not improvised, which is why the survey timetable usually starts from yard availability.
The sea trial is where systems are proven under load — propulsion, steering, stabilisers, generators under real electrical demand, noise and vibration, and bridge systems in use. It is normally attended by the specialists whose systems are being tested.

What happens after defects are identified
Findings on a larger yacht are rarely pass or fail. They are a cost and time schedule. The buyer's decision is usually whether the identified work is corrected by the seller before closing, funded through a price adjustment or retention, absorbed into a planned refit, or serious enough to walk away.
Where a finding is significant but not fully diagnosed — suspected coatings failure, an unexplained alarm history, or machinery condition that needs opening up — the normal step is a targeted further investigation rather than a renegotiation based on assumption.
Cost
There is no meaningful universal figure for a superyacht survey, and any single quoted number should be treated with suspicion. Cost is driven by length overall, the number and complexity of systems, how many specialists attend, whether haul-out and dock time is included, the yard's day rate in that location, and travel for the survey team.
The practical approach is to define scope first, then obtain quotations against that scope. A survey priced without a defined scope cannot be compared with another.
