What Pacific coast conditions mean for a survey

Unlike an estuary or a brackish bay, the California coast is full-strength seawater with consistent exposure. Corrosion, anode consumption, marine growth and coating breakdown are steady, continuous processes rather than seasonal ones. On a yacht kept in the water year round, underwater condition and coating history are among the most informative things a haul-out reveals.

Open-ocean use also puts more emphasis on structure, deck sealing and ground tackle than sheltered inland cruising does. A yacht that has run offshore between harbours has been loaded differently from one that has spent its life in flat water, and the inspection should be briefed accordingly.

Berthing is the other local reality. Slips in the main harbours are limited and often waitlisted, so a buyer needs to know where the yacht will live before completing — and where it can be lifted and worked on if the survey identifies work.

Survey timing

California's advantage over cold-winter markets is that surveys can be carried out and yachts can be trialled at essentially any time of year. Machinery does not need to come out of lay-up, freshwater systems are not drained, and a sea trial can normally be arranged without waiting for a launch date.

That does not mean scheduling is trivial. Yard and lift availability still needs to be secured early, and coastal weather affects the trial: morning fog, afternoon breeze and swell all influence when a representative trial can be run.

• Systems can generally be tested as found, rather than after de-winterising.
• Sea trials can be scheduled year round, subject to weather and swell.
• Haul-out slots should still be booked in advance rather than assumed.
• Where a yacht is berthed a long way from the nearest suitable lift, allow transit time in the survey timetable.

Haul-out and sea trial logistics

• Underwater structure, running gear and coatings below the waterline require a lift; plan the haul rather than treating it as optional.
• Confirm who pays for lift, blocking, pressure wash and lay days before the survey date.
• Ask whether the surveyor may inspect the hull before pressure washing, and attend the lift if permitted.
• Run the sea trial to full rated engine load, and inspect bilges during and immediately after.
• Test stabilisers, steering, thrusters and electrical load behaviour under real demand.
• On a sailing yacht, hoist, reef and sail under load on both tacks in genuine breeze.

Buyers purchasing across the border

Some California buyers look at yachts lying south of the border, and some Mexican-based yachts come north to sell. Both are common. The survey itself is not fundamentally different, but the logistics are: surveyor travel, yard availability, and the movement of the vessel all need to be planned before an inspection period is agreed.

Import, tax and registration consequences of buying or moving a yacht across a border are matters for a marine lawyer, customs broker or tax adviser, not for a surveyor and not for us. Get that advice in parallel with the survey rather than after it.

Buyer preparation

• Agree the survey scope in writing, including whether haul-out and sea trial are included.
• Appoint a surveyor independent of the selling broker and of any yard likely to quote for repairs.
• Ask for a sample report and confirm turnaround fits your inspection period.
• Request maintenance, refit and coating records — on a year-round seawater yacht these are especially informative.
• Confirm where the yacht will be berthed after purchase before you complete.
• Obtain independent repair quotations before negotiating on findings.
